Celine Dion and Tiger Woods Big Water Wasters

R-CELINE-DION-TIGER-WOODS-WATER-WASTER-huge

Since water has been on my mind lately (could have something to do with moving to Portland this past year), I came across this article today about a community in Treasure Coast (Palm Beach, Florida area) that are excessive, did I say EXCESSIVE, water wasters! Yikes, I thought my shower experiment proved me to be a waster...... here are the quick facts:
  • Martin County's coastline residents use up to 1.6 million gallons of water a month. That is 250 times more than the average resident in that county.
  • The Top water waster for the past 12 months (since March) went to Celine Dion's management company. Renlec Management. How much did they use in one year? aprox. 6.5 million gallons!
  • Tiger Wood's estate used aprox 3.7 million gallons that year
  • Mike Kittredge, founder of Yankee Candle Company, used less water, only 151,000 gallons PER MONTH
Clearly, this is not only a waste of water, but just think of what kind of money these people are spending on their water bills....... Tiger couldn't that money go to better use?

Ever Wonder How Much Water You Really Use When You Shower?

Water use has been on my mind lately. I am aware that there are people in our world that walk sometimes well over an hour to reach water. So, how much water am I using?

This morning I decided to find out. I plugged the bathtub and then started the shower (including the time to heat up the water). I took a fairly leisurely shower and when I was finished I stepped out to see how much I had used. It did not look like a lot. The water level was just below the jets for the tub. I would fill the tub twice as high for my son's baths.

I grabbed a 2 gallon painter's bucket and started to fill it. To be honest, I was thinking maybe I would get three buckets full. I walked the  water outside and watered my plants (three decorative trees, four bushes, and two potted plants were watered). I continued this process over and over until the tub was empty. I walked just under 8 buckets of water outside (that is 16 gallons!). It was a bit of work, and I wondered if I had to do just this simple task everyday would I start taking one minute showers?

What did I learn?

    * The amount of water for a normal shower was much, much more than I thought.

    * If I had to reuse the water (by bringing it outside to water my plants everyday) I would probably take very short showers.

    * It felt FANTASTIC to get a second use of the water!

    * Life is good in America- how fortunate we are to be able to turn on the tap and have water instantly!!

    * I am Grateful.

Blessings,

Justyn

Reduce Junk Mail for Your Home & Business

You may have already put your name in opt-out forms and have called companies to be removed from their lists. Consider adding your old addresses to opt-out forms. It is something that is often over looked. You move away and have your mail forwarded case closed..... well you junk mail is not being forwarded. At my last house I not only added my old address to opt -out forms but added the previous owners to the opt-out forms ( I was getting their junk mail at my new house - they left and thought that their mail would follow - not junk mail). Not convinced, identity theft is on the rise, who is getting credit card offers in your name?
Finally, add your business address (old and new) to opt-out of junk mail.

Quick Junk Mail Facts From Native Forest Network Guide

The average person gets only 1.5 personal letters each week, compared to 10.8 pieces of junk mail.
Each person will receive almost 560 pieces of junk mail this year.
That's 4.5 million tons of junk mail produced each year!
44% of all junk mail is thrown in the trash, unopened and unread.
Approximately 40% of the solid mass that makes up our landfills is paper and paperboard waste.
By the year 2010, it is predicted to make up about 48%.
100 million trees are ground up each year to produce junk mail.
Lists of names and addresses used in bulk mailings are in mass data-collection networks, compiled from phone books, warranty cards, and charity donations (to name a few).
Your name is typically worth 3 to 20 cents each time it is sold.

Here are some resources:

Ecological Mail Coalition: This is a free service that will remove old employees from mailing lists. You can also use it to remove your name from any company you worked.

Direct Marketing Association: Here you can remove your name, family members names, and old tenants/owners from mailing lists. I also use it to remove my name and family member's names from our old addresses. You can also remove: your email address, telephone number, and get off of credit card offers lists. I have found this to eliminate a huge amount of junk mail. This costs $1.00 per name and address- I think it is a bargain for the service.

Finally, I would like to add that my company Go Natural Baby does not do paper mailings to our consumers. Customers can add their name to our email mailing list, but we rarely send out those either. I personally find it annoying when a company sends me an email every week and in some cases twice a week! Our customers, who opt-in to our email list can expect less than 10 emails per year!

Let's start the New Year off with less Junk,
